Financial Services Compensation Scheme
Different Investment types have different levels of compensation available if the provider becomes insolvent.
The various compensation arrangements are dealt with under the umbrella of ‘The Financial Services Compensation Scheme’, established under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. Examples of the arrangements applying to different investments and providers are as follows:
Banks/buildings societies: Maximum compensation is now £85,000 per group. Deposits denominated in all currencies are treated alike.
National Savings and Investments: Technically 100% secure as the government underwrites investments.
Most other types of Investments – Maximum compensation is £85,000 per investment group.
The foregoing examples relate in all cases to UK registered and licensed companies only. The scheme provides compensation for individual and some company investors. Please note that the limits shown apply to single institutions - that is all companies in a group.
